'Nevada Passage' participant will run, bike ... and race a railroad handcar

From: The Daily Camera.com

Ever heard of Xterra? Called Aquaterra in 1996, its inaugural year, the race consisted of a 1.5K open-ocean swim, a 30K mountain-bike race and an 11K trail run on Maui.

"It represented a bold new racing format that attracted outdoor enthusiasts, mostly mountain bikers and triathletes," according to the Xterra Web site.

These days, the Nissan Xterra Points Series pits amateur athletes against one another at 50 contests across the United States. Regional champions compete in the Xterra USA championship and World Championship.

But you know these hard-core types. Always looking for the next adventure or challenge. Running? Swimming? Biking? All very nice. But let's toss in a little Jet Ski competition, some sandboarding, railroad-handcar racing, even "goat tying" — all in the Nevada desert?

Welcome to the made-for-TV reality show and adventure competition, "The Nevada Passage," sponsored by Team Unlimited, which runs the Xterra series.
