XTERRA Tahoe City Race Report

By Scott Muir, XTERRA Rep

A beautiful crisp morning greeted racers in Tahoe City for a new course along the Northwest corner of Lake Tahoe.  Todd Jackson had put together another great course on Lake Tahoe with shocking (57 degree) water, a long bike course and challenging run.  Commons Beach in Tahoe City is the perfect setting and a great view to the Flume Trial and Nationals in a few months…

With 110 racers in the field and an additional 38 for a short course it was a big day for the new event.  The men’s race was dominated by local athletes as Tom Lyons and Phil Glenn of Reno traded the lead on the bike and again on the run with Phil winning by less than 2 minutes in 2:45.43.  Ross McMahan of Incline Village, NV finished third, keeping the top three all under 2:50.  The women’s race was taken away by local Emma Garrard of Truckee in 3:06.53 with Laura Bermudez(Menlo Park, CA) and Sarah McMahan(Incline Village, NV) rounding out the top three.

Most athletes loved the bike course, lots of climbing, room to pass, some great rolling single track and fast down to the finish.  The run was tough, coming off the over 20 mile ride and then climbing for more than two miles right out of transition.  Some rolling single track in sage and pine at the back of the run loop to loosen up and a fast spin the legs downhill all the way to the finish.

Come out next year for an early season Tahoe practice race and then ride the Flume on Sunday!!!
