Sutphen, Marinangeli Win XTERRA Xtreme Trail Run

(Palatine, IL) – On a perfect summer day, about 100 runners lined up at the start of the XTERRA XTREME Trail Run on Saturday at Deer Grove West Forest Preserve.

In a field largely dominated by Chicagoland residents, Naperville native Alex Sutphen, 21, had the fastest finish for the 12km course with his time of 41:48. A little more than 2 minutes behind him was Mark Pepple, 28, from Gainesville, Florida.

In the women’s division, Jean Marinangeli , 24, took home her second win of the XTERRA Chicago Trail Run Series after coming in first at the XTERRA X-Country Trail Run on June 7. Yesterday, Marinangeli, an Arlington Heights local, crossed the finish line in just 48:05 coming in seventh place over all. Three minutes later was runner-up Erin Lyon, 31, of Chicago.

The XTERRA Chicago Trail Run Series has been a great success over this 2008 season. Race director Scott Bush did a fantastic job of creating a strong XTERRA following throughout the series while still drawing a large number of newcomers for each event.

Since this was the third and final event in the 2008 Chicago Trail Run Series, Regional Champions will be crowned and invited to race for free at the XTERRA Trail Running National Championship on September 27 in Bend, Oregon. Here runners from across the country will come together to challenge themselves against trail running’s best competitors. From there, runners will have the opportunity to compete in the first-ever XTERRA Trail Running World Championship on December 7 over a spectacular course on Kualoa Ranch in Hawaii.
