Dewitt, Castelanelli Claim Titles at XTERRA Boney Mountain

(Newbury Park, CA) – After wildfires postponed the XTERRA Boney Mountain Trail Runs from October to this past Saturday, 438 runners were more than ready to come out and tackle what turned out to be the “windiest Boney Mountain to date” according to race director Brennan Lindner.

The weather didn’t stop Benjamin Dewitt, 23 and residing in Ventura, CA, from posting the fastest time of the day for the 21km course in just 1:33:48. Dewitt, who was also the winner of the XTERRA Point Mugu 11km race back in September, crossed the finish line less than a minute ahead of the 2008 XTERRA Mission Trails champion Patrick Baldwin, 33, of Del Mar.

It was Santa Barbara resident Christina Castelanelli, 30, who took the women’s 21km title in 1:50:52. This XTERRA Trail Running World Championship bronze medalist was able to finish almost 3 minutes ahead of Jen Todd, 34, and 12 minutes ahead of her sister Mary, who won her age group and placed 6th overall this past weekend. The youngest runner in the half-marathon distance Xduro event was 14-year old Hannah Rae Finchamp, from Altadena, who turned in an amazing 7th place finish overall.

In the 6km race, it was 19-year old Luke Klein who proudly took first place for the men in his hometown with his time of 30:41 while Lara Ray, 40, from Camarillo won for the women just a minute later.

This was the fourth of seven races in the 2008-09 XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series giving runners three more opportunities to add points toward their series totals. Athletes with top points will earn free entry to the XTERRA Trail Running National Championship next September in Bend, Oregon. In addition, runners finishing this race in less than 3 hours automatically qualify for both Nationals and the XTERRA Trail Running World Championship in Hawaii.
