New XTERRA Champions Crowned at Warwick Park

(Pottstown, PA) - Yesterday was National Running Day, and to celebrate, XTERRA was in the Philadelphia area for the XTERRA Warwick Park Ruckus Trail Run. Even after day-long thunderstorms threatened the event, local runners raced over 5-kilometers of challenging dirt trails and steep climbs to demonstrate trail running as a healthy, fun, and accessible form of exercise.

Just when it looked like the 2009 XTERRA Philly Trail Run Series was going to be swept by two-time winners Dan Dix and Jerilyn Kucharski, newcomers Jonas Hampton and Carly Summers were able to dethrone the undefeated duo. University of Hartford runner Hampton, 20 of Stowe, PA, set the day’s record in 19:04 with Gilbertsville resident Brett Kelly, at just 14-years old, taking second just over a minute later. Dan Dix finished third in 20:31.

Another young face graced the top of the winner’s podium as Summers, 19 of Spring City, PA, turned in her time of 23:55. Series leader Kucharski of Quakertown, PA crossed the finish line just eleven seconds later to claim the runner-up position.

XTERRA Ambassador Rich Costello summed up the day by saying, “I had a really fun ‘ruckus’ on the trails of Warwick Park and loved the rushing creek crossing.” Rich has been running in the series this year with his daughter and has really been enjoying the XTERRA experience together.

This was the third of five races in the 2009 XTERRA Philly Trail Run Series, and points will be awarded to the top 15 runners in each age group. Those ending the season with top scores will be invited to race for free at the XTERRA Trail Running National Championship on September 13 in Bend, Oregon. From there, Philly runners can say aloha to the XTERRA Trail Running World Championship scheduled for December 6 on the spectacular Hawaiian island of Oahu.
