Mooney, Horsager Win Battle at Big Creek

(Roswell, GA) – In a sold out field of 350 runners, Tara Mooney and Josh Horsager came out on top of today’s XTERRA Battle at Big Creek Trail Run. Roswell’s Big Creek Trails set the stage as Georgia’s top trail runners battled their way through two distances of challenging off-road adventures.

The day’s fastest time in the main 15km event belonged to Horsager, 32, crossing the finish line in 1:04:22, just 34 seconds ahead of 27-year old Jon Obst. Roswell’s own Federico Ramos, 49, rounded out the podium taking third place in 1:07:19.

Mooney, 2008 XTERRA Georgia Regional Champion from Kennesaw, continued her streak winning today’s race in 1:14:40. Just over two minutes later, Alpharetta’s Lisa Marshall, 45, won the second place title in 1:16:56 while Debi Nash, 38 from Kennesaw, claimed third in 1:17:41.

Luke Godleski, 27, won the 7km race in 32:17 followed by father and son Canton runners Andrew Whetten, 16, and Robert Whetten, 51, crossing the finish line in 33:59 and 34:18 respectively. Katherine Thornhill, 22 from Athens, won the women’s short race in 43:18, a mere 18 seconds ahead of Atlanta’s Ashley Kuehne, 39. Daileen Schippmann, 38 of Cumming, wrapped up the top three in 46:03.

This was the third of six races in the 2010 XTERRA Georgia Trail Run Series. Top runners in the 15km event will earn points toward their series totals, and those ending the season with the highest scores will be crowned XTERRA Regional Champions and win free entry to the XTERRA Trail Running National Championship next fall. The next opportunity for area runners to race in the 2010 XTERRA Georgia Trail Run Series is coming up on November 29th at the XTERRA Victoria Bryant 10km Trail Run in Royston.
