Bauer, Budden Champions at Chilly XTERRA Start

(Syosset, NY) – The brand new XTERRA Long Island Trail Run Series crowned its first set of winners at yesterday’s snowy XTERRA Stillwell Trail Run in Syosset. Chris Bauer and Kristin Budden were able to navigate around the icy, snow-covered trails as they blew past the competition in the 3.45-mile race around Stillwell Woods Park.

Despite the mix of mud, snow, ice, rocks and hills, 22-year old Bauer of Sea Cliff, NY was able to trudge his way across the finish line with the day’s record of 21:56. Just 17 seconds later, David Borg of Farmingdale claimed second place while Merrick’s Nick Haile secured third in 23:18.

Freezing temperatures didn’t stop Rye Brook’s Kristin Budden from an overwhelming women’s victory clocking a 26:55, more than 2 minutes ahead of runner-up Deb Breathe of East Moriches, NY. Michelle Homan of Medford seized the overall bronze medal in 29:58 to round out the top three. In addition to their titles, the top three male and female overall winners also enjoyed their piece of the day’s $450 prize purse.

Originally the XTERRA Stillwell Trail Run was scheduled to run five miles, but due to tough terrain and uncooperative weather conditions, the course was cut short for safety issues. According to Peter Meirs, who was happy to race in his hometown of Syosset, “There were still a lot of treacherous conditions making it easy to trip and fall, but I was having a blast.”

As the inaugural race in the long-awaited 2010 XTERRA Long Island Trail Run Series, this was the initial of four races and the first opportunity for Long Islanders to earn the coveted XTERRA series points. Those finishing the season with the highest scores will be crowned XTERRA Regional Champions and win free entry into the XTERRA Trail Running National Championship on September 18th in Bend, Oregon. The top three overall male and female champions in the XTERRA Long Island Series will also be awarded part of the $1200 prize purse.
