Record Breaking Day at XTERRA Redwood Peak

(Oakland, CA) – Northern California runners flocked to the Oakland Hills for this past Sunday’s XTERRA Redwood Peak Trail Run. The stacked field attracted some of the area’s best runners, but it was Sam Robinson and Jennifer Joynt who took home the top titles with their record breaking times.

Robinson, 25 from Berkeley, blew away the men’s 17-kilometer race with his winning time of 1:07:22. Following at 1:08:56 was Reno’s Justin Thomas, 35, while XTERRA SoCal superstar Sean Kievning, 26, came all the way from Redondo Beach to claim third in 1:13:57.

The women’s long race ended up to be a bit of a nail-biter with Joynt, 39, finishing in 1:29:30, just 22 seconds ahead of runner up Virginia Landin Nelson, 45 of Berkeley. Walnut Creek’s Sarah Beck, 34, rounded out the podium in 1:30:16.

The XTERRA Redwood Peak event also hosted a shorter 5K for those looking for a fun, smaller off-road adventure. Wayne Cottrell, 48, and Lisa Penzel, 45 of Oakland, broke the tape to finish first with their times of 23:53 and 26:00 for the men and women respectively.

The day proved to be a huge success with beautiful weather and a record-breaking course. According to Brian Moffett, who won his age group for the 17km race, “This was a great event. It was so different from any other trail run I’ve done since the course started off downhill creating a challenging run at a beautiful location.”

Since this was the second of three races in the 2010 XTERRA NorCal Trail Run Series, just the XTERRA Marin Headlands Xduro stands between local runners and their Regional Champion titles. Those ending the season with the highest totals will be given their crowns and free entry into the XTERRA Trail Running National Championship on September 18th in the trail runners’ playground of Bend, Oregon.

Then on December 5th, NorCal runners are invited to be part of an international start list at the XTERRA Trail Running World Championship on the beautiful Hawaiian island of Oahu’s Kualoa Ranch.
