New Women's Record at XTERRA Malibu Creek

(Malibu, CA) – Over 800 runners from sixteen states lined up at the start of yesterday morning’s XTERRA Malibu Creek Xduro, but it was Emilio Perez and Mary Colburn who made their mark by posting their winning times of 1:38:29 and 1:43:56 respectively for the main, half-marathon distance course.

Culver City’s Colburn, 32, set a new 22-kilometer women’s course record crossing the finish line more than 13 minutes ahead of XTERRA SoCal Series regular Anissa Faulkner, 39, and her time of 1:57:00. Sarah Bozorg, 29 of San Diego, rounded out the women’s podium in 2:03:39.

Perez, 31 of Riverside, bested runner-up West Hills resident Paul Ambrose’s second place time of 1:39:03 to win the men’s long race. SaltStick founder and XTERRA Lake Las Vegas Trail Run runner-up Jonathan Toker, 35, took third in 1:40:15.

Camron Shahmirzadi, 21 of Woodland Hills, and 15-year old Megan Huebner championed the men’s and women’s 6-kilometer fun run with their winning times of 25:22 and 30:43 respectively.

According to race director Brennan Lindner, sun and scrapes were the theme of the day, and runners were rewarded for their efforts by a serious post-race BBQ sponsored by Subaru. “Great weather, a record women’s race, and some serious grub, what could be better?”

The XTERRA Malibu Creek Xduro is usually the XTERRA SoCal series finale, however early season weather caused race directors to postpone the XTERRA Mission Gorge Trail Run to May 30th giving runners one more chance to pad their point totals. Top season scores are crowned XTERRA SoCal Regional Champions and given free entry into the XTERRA Trail Running National Championship on September 18th in Bend, Oregon.

Then on December 5th, athletes are invited to race at the XTERRA Trail Running World Championship on the exotic Hawaiian island of Oahu. With no qualification necessary, anyone is welcome to race at the spectacular Kualoa Ranch, which has been the home to major productions like Jurassic Park, Godzilla and LOST.
