XTERRA Texas Series will Conclude 2010 Season at Austin

Regional champions will be crowned at Aug. 21 race

More than 200 runners are expected to participate in the XTERRA Austin Trail Run, which is scheduled for Aug. 21 at Emma Long Park.

The 18-kilometer race will serve as the final event in the 2010 XTERRA Texas Trail Run Series, so it will be the final chance for runners to earn points toward a regional championship. Runners with the most points in each respective age group at the end of the season are considered regional champions, and will receive free entry into the XTERRA Trail Running National Championship at Bend, Ore., on Sept. 18.

The XTERRA Austin Trail Run will offer a scenic, yet challenging 18-kilometer course. According to race director Mike Carter, the trail at Emma Long Park is "unique."

"It starts with a half-mile run along the water at Lake Austin, and it's just beautiful," Carter said. "But then the torture begins. You have to climb a steep cliff, and it's not an easy climb. There are actually ropes there to help you climb. Once you get through that, there's a lot of single track along the cliffs, overlooking the lake."

What's more, temperatures are expected to be near triple-digits on race day. "It's definitely a challenge," Carter said. "But it's also one of the most fun and beautiful trails around."
