Brosseau and Colburn Take Top Honors at Point Mugu

More than 420 participate in SoCal Series opener

Jason Brosseau made the most of his first XTERRA Trail Run, and Mary Colburn proved her worth as one of the top female trail runners in the nation to highlight the XTERRA Point Mugu Trail Run today at Malibu/Oxnard, Calif.

More than 420 runners participated in the race at Point Mugu State Park. It was the first of seven races in the 2010-11 season for the XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series.

Brosseau, a first lieutenant at Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc, Calif., was the first overall finisher. He completed the 18-kilometer long course in 1 hour, 13 minutes, 11 seconds.

Brosseau, 26, has competed in road marathons (he placed third in the Air Force Marathon on Sept. 18), but today was his first experience in a trail race.

Jimmy Dean Freeman, founder of the popular Coyote Running group in Southern California, placed second with a time of 1:16:27.

Colburn, who is from Culver City, Calif., was an impressive third overall and first among the females. She finished with a time of 1:17:30, which was more than five minutes ahead of the next female.

Colburn, 33, placed third at the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship race last month at Bend, Ore. The Point Mugu Trail Run was her first race since the XTERRA Nationals.

Anissa Faulkner of Malibu, Calif., was the second female with a time of 1:22:33. Faulkner won the Point Mugu Trail Run in 2008, but skipped last year's race due to the birth of her twin babies.

The 18-kilometer course featured several hill climbs, and a steep downhill section near the finish. Cool temperatures in the 50s helped contribute to the fast times.

An 11-kilometer short course was also completed today. Martin Mudry was the first overall finisher in 47:03, and Lara Ray was the first female in 58:18.

The next race in the XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series is Topanga Turkey Trot in Los Angeles on Nov. 25. For entry information visit www.xterratrailrun.com or www.trailrace.com.

Cumulative points for the XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series will be compiled throughout the 2010-11 season. The top age-group runners at the end of the season will receive free entry to the 2011 XTERRA Trail Run National Championship.
