2011-12 Alabama Series Fast Approaching

Holley SweeneyThe fall season in Alabama is not all about preparing for football. The XTERRA Alabama Trail Run Series will also start up its new season this fall.

The 2011-12 Alabama Series will feature four races of varying distances in some of the state's most picturesque settings. But runners should not be fooled by the beautiful scenery, as the courses are also considered some of the most challenging in all of America.

In fact, the "Double Oak Trail" at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Ala., was listed as one of the top 25 trails in America by Runner's World Magazine in 2011. That trail (pictured at right) will be used for two races in the Alabama Series during the 2011-12 season.

The Alabama Series will open on Sept. 17 at Cheaha State Park in Delta, Ala. The complete schedule is below.

Runners of all ages and skill levels can participate in the Alabama Series, as race distances range from 5 kilometers to a full marathon (42 kilometers).

Early registration - which comes with a discounted price - for the races is already open at www.dirtyspokes.com and www.xterratrailrun.com.
