Virginia youth shine in first triathlon

In Norfolk, Virginia the grand finale of the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) run by Old Dominion University, where more than 600 inner city children have been learning about running, biking and swimming…and even more specifically about off-road triathlons, took place today with a triathlon held at Maury High School for 100 kids between the ages of 10 and 15 years of age.

The race began with a relay swim, followed with a mile bike, and finished with a ½ mile run.  Because these kids are from inner city environments that sometimes prevent positive reinforcement and hope for a bright future, this training program was designed to show every child what they can do with hard work and a lot of determination.  Their faces when crossing the finish line told a story of success, understanding they can do it, and the pure joy and completion of a hard fought journey.

In the last six weeks they've learned what it takes to negotiate a mountain bike on various terrains, climb rocks, run through fields and on-road challenges in preparation for more vigorous off-road training next year.  The XTERRA Foundation provided much of the equipment for the program, including mountain bikes and stationary bikes.  There was no cost to the child for the program except showing up and doing their best.
