Baltimore’s First XTERRA Scramble is Revving Up

XTERRA's Scramble Adventure in Baltimore is drawing interest from every level of athlete, from 20 time Iron Man participant Lyn Brook to the average runner.  Race producer Dave Cooley fully expects to reach the 400 person limit for the unique adventure set for August 14, 2005 at the Boody Vineyard in Hydes.

The Charm City Run XTERRA Scramble 5k has peaked the interest of many new runners looking for an edge, with women making up 56% of the entries.  In anticipation of a sell out, no race day entries are available.

The Charm City Run XTERRA Scramble 5k will take participants through the Boordy Vineyard in Hydes, dodging grapevines and the natural challenges of the land.  The event will be held on Sunday, August 14, 2005.  It will start at 6:00 p.m. and finish with a wine tasting, tour of the Boordy Vineyard and evening music.

There will be awards in the following categories:
15& under, 16 - 19, 20 - 29, 30 - 39, 40 - 49, 50 - 59, 60 - 69, 70 & over for male and female.

Traffic may be impacted along Long Green, a rural two lane road, during the 3.1 mile run, but this lane and the entire course will be manned by police where needed for safety.

The XTERRA® Trail Run Scramble Series offers "do-able adventures" for runners looking for the challenge only nature and XTERRA can offer -leaping over rocks and roots, climbing hills and trails, and running through creeks and ravines.  A SCRAMBLE is a twisting, turning escape from pounding the pavement.  A SCRAMBLE is fun.  It's not your ordinary weekend run.  It's an off-the-wall, in-your-face challenge that puts nature at the forefront and tests your determination and endurance.

The run is aimed at the health and wellness runner looking for an off-road running challenge while benefiting a local organization.

The inception of the XTERRA Scramble Series came from the XTERRA Foundation's goal to reach out to at-risk children and teach them how to deal with adversity and competition at an early age.   The more opportunity a child has, the better the odds for a successful outcome.

Each Scramble event has partnered with a local non-profit organization which will benefit directly from the XTERRA Foundation and the XTERRA Scramble Series.  The local beneficiary will be directly tied to the community and, in many cases, fulfill the Foundation's mission of reaching out to kids by having both a direct financial benefit and the chance, in most venues, to participate in the event itself.

The XTERRA Scramble in Baltimore will benefit St. Joseph Medical Center's Heart Institute, Maryland's largest open-heart surgery and all-digital cardiac catheterization program.   The Institute offers a range of diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic facilities and services such as a chest pain center, cardio graphics, electrophysiology lab, nuclear medicine, cardiac intensive care, hospital-wide monitoring capabilities and cardiovascular fitness programs.
