No Whiners at Knoxville Scramble(Knoxville, TN) The XTERRA Foundation and the Knoxville Track Club sponsored the XTERRA Scramble 15k Trail Run on Saturday, October 8, at the North Boundary Trail in Oak Ridge. Despite nature’s already challenging off road trail for the event, wet weather added to the day’s obstacles. Heavy rains the day before the event made the course slick and the trails tricky. Even with these obstacles, runners were ready for the experience. Joe Goetz immediately separated from the pack after the start and dominated the field, winning in a time of 59:09. A close race for the next two men saw Chris Cowart finish second in 1:09:28 and Nick Lavrik finish third in 1:09:42. The women’s field saw local Oak Ridger Johnna French win convincingly in 1:10:25. The women’s second-place finisher, Kathy Wolski, finished in 1:12:17 despite just having had a baby last month. Karen Beaulieu rounded out the women’s top-three in 1:16:11. “The Knoxville Track Club really rallied behind this event,” noted race director Larry Brede. “We were so excited to have XTERRA come to Knoxville and bring their special brand of off road races to our town. And people loved it, even with the rain!” The Scramble Series continues this week in Athens, GA on Sunday, October 16 at Heritage Park and then in Columbus, OH on Saturday, October 22, 2005 at Alum Creek State Park.
