XTERRA Headed to the Philippines in 2011

Tom Kiely and Fred UytengsuXTERRA CEO Tom Kiely was in Manila yesterday for the official launch of the XTERRA Philippines Championship, which will join the 2011 XTERRA World Tour with its inaugural race on March 6.  XTERRA in the Philippines will be organized by Sunrise Events, which also produces the Ironman 70.3 Philippines.

"The vision of the company is to stage world-class events that will put the Philippines in the triathlon and tourism map of the world," said Wilfred "Fred" Uytengsu, President of Sunrise Events (pictured here with Kiely). "We are honored to have the franchise for XTERRA in the Philippines. We believe this creates opportunities for mountain bikers and trail runners (as well as conventional triathletes) to experience top quality events in the country."

Uytengsu also added that mountain biking is actually a larger demographic in the Philippines and expects these events to be much larger than traditional triathlons.

The race is a week before the XTERRA Saipan Championship on March 13, which is followed by the Tagaman road triathlon in Saipan on March 20th, and XTERRA Guam on March 27, making a month of training and racing in Asia an attractive proposition.

To kick start XTERRA in the Philippines, Sunrise Events will host several events leading up to the championship race in March, starting with the XTERRA Putik Pare off-road duathlon relay race at Nuvali, Sta Rosa, Laguna on November 7.
