The inaugural XTERRA Trail Running World Championship is an off-road half-marathon “Xduro” scheduled for December 7, 2008 on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. For competitive runners, $10,000 in prize money will be awarded to the top male and female finishers.
The race is just a week before the Honolulu Marathon on December 14 – setting up what promises to be one of the “greatest weeks of running on Earth” for harriers from around the world.
The majestic Kaaawa Valley at Kualoa Ranch, located on the northeastern side of Oahu less than an hour from Honolulu, will provide the ultimate Hawaiian experience for this first-ever gathering of international trail runners.
The 4,000-acre working cattle ranch reaches from the steep mountain cliffs to the sparkling sea and the terrain varies fromdense rainforest to broad open valleys and from beautiful white sand beaches to awesome verdant cliff faces. The epic nature of Kualoa Ranch has inspired television shows and Hollywood films such as Jurassic Park, Windtalkers, Pearl Harbor, Godzilla, Tears of the Sun, 50 First Dates, and LOST.
The World Champs will also immerse participants in a festival atmosphere with live music, great food, and family entertainment, shorter distance trail runs, races for kids, a walk-a-thon for charity, and relay team competitions.
More than a dozen endurance runs across the U.S. and several more around the globe will qualify runners to compete in the world championship. Runners simply need to finish under three hours in 18-23k races, and under four hours in 24-30k events. (In this first season, however, it will not be mandatory to qualify).
The XTERRA Trail Run World Champs is held in conjunction with the XTERRA Trail Running Series, a collection of more than 50 trail runs of various distances twisting on crooked, dirty, and rocky paths from Malibu to Japan.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The World Championship course will start in Kaaawa Valley at Kualoa Ranch on the northeastern side of Oahu. Runners will navigate the length of the valley over the pu'u (connecting steep hill) and into Hakipu`u Valley. Runner's will round Hakipu'u Valley following Kamehameha Highway past Chinaman's Hat and back around and down into Kaaawa Valley again. Then a final lap around the compound area before runner's cross the finish line. Expect a balanced course of hills and flat valley trails with possible stream crossings and some tight, twisty sections that can only be described as uniquely XTERRA.
