KUALOA RANCH / OAHU, HAWAII | DECEMBER 6, 2009

The XTERRA Trail Running World Championship is an off-road, half-marathon distance “Xduro” scheduled for December 6, 2009 on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. The event will also host two shorter distance trail runs, free kids races, an adventure walk for charity, great food and stunning scenery.
At last year’s inaugural event, more than 800 runners from 32 states and eight countries participated in the 5, 10, and 21km events. Top male and female finishers were awarded from the $10,000 prize purse.
The spectacular Kualoa Ranch, on the northeastern side of Oahu less than an hour from Honolulu, will once again host this ultimate Hawaiian experience for the international field of trail runners.
The 4,000-acre working cattle ranch reaches from the steep mountain cliffs to the sparkling sea and the terrain varies from dense rainforest to broad open valleys and from beautiful white sand beaches to awesome verdant cliff faces. The epic nature of Kualoa Ranch has inspired television shows and Hollywood films such as Jurassic Park, Windtalkers, Pearl Harbor, Godzilla, Tears of the Sun, 50 First Dates, and LOST.
The XTERRA Trail Running World Championship is held in conjunction with the 2009 XTERRA Trail Run Series, a collection of adventurous, off-road trail runs of various distances spanning the globe from Malibu to Japan.
While it is NOT necessary to qualify for the 2009 XTERRA Trail Run World event, runners who complete one of the half-marathon distance XTERRA Xduro events throughout the season in less than 3 hours will receive special recognition on race day.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The World Championship course will start in Kaaawa Valley at Kualoa Ranch on the northeastern side of Oahu. Runners will navigate the length of the valley, around the front of the ranch and into Hakipu`u Valley, then go over the ridgeline and back into Kaaawa. Expect a balanced course of hills and flat valley trails with several stream crossings and some tight, twisty sections that can only be described as uniquely XTERRA. Note that there is no pre-running allowed, so for one and all it will be a brand new adventure. For a more detailed description click here.
Aid Stations – There will be two aid stations for the 5km/3.1-mile race (at 1.7 and 2.5 miles), five for the 10km/6.20-miler (1.7, 2.5, 3.2, 4.7, and 5.8mi) and seven for the 21km/13.1-miler (1.7, 2.5, 5.7, 7.7, 10.3, 12.2, and 12.7). Gatorade and water served at all stations, and GU Energy Gel packets available at the third station (5.7-mile mark) for the 21km race only.
Rain or Shine - The race will go on. We actually think it’d be very cool if it rained. Can you imagine how much fun we’d have slipping and sliding down the muddy slopes in the Valley. It’d be like a scene straight out of an Indiana Jones adventure! We’ll have a wash area for you to clean-up regardless.
Random Tips – Bring your umbrella, a towel and change of clothes, a chair, sunscreen, and maybe some mosquito repellant. You’ll have easy access to your car so feel free to load up like you’re going on the SuperFerry.

DIRECTIONS
Kualoa Ranch is only 45 minutes from Waikiki. To get there, take the H-1 Freeway west to the LIKELIKE Highway / Route 63. Proceed up the LIKELIKE Highway and through the Wilson Tunnel. Descend towards Kaneohe town and exit onto KAHEKILI Highway / Route 83, heading north. You will go straight through the light at the end of the KAHEKILI exit.
Continue along Kahekili Highway - note that the road becomes Kamehameha Highway as you pass the historic "Hygienic Store" in the village of Kahalu`u. In about 10 minutes you will see signs indicating you are approaching the Kualoa Ranch entrance which will be on your left as you round the curve past Mokoli`i Island (Chinaman's Hat). Go past the main entrance to Kualoa Ranch and make your next left into the XTERRA festivities.

Parking
It's $5 and you’ll park in the middle of the valley where we’re set-up, not at the main ranch house. We’ll have signs guiding you to the right spot.
Shuttle from Waikiki
On race day, XTERRA will be operating a round-trip shuttle between Waikiki and Kualoa Ranch. For $20 you can avoid the hassle of directions, parking fees, and the 45 minute drive to the race site. Sign up for the shuttle along with your race registration or by calling Emily at 877-XTERRA-1.
ATHLETE RIDE SHARE BULLETIN BOARD
We encourage you to connect with fellow trail runners if you need transportation to and from Kualoa Ranch (about 45 mins from Waikiki).
If you've rented a car for your stay or are a local Oahu runner and have room for others show your aloha spirit with your fellow athletes in need. Car pooling not only helps those who need transportation but it reduces our impact on the environment by decreasing the number of cars on the road, reduces gas comsumption and decreases the amount of parking needed.
We've created a thread on our discussion forum to help you connect with your fellow runners. Sign up for an account if you have yet to do so and post your request.
ATHLETE PHOTOS
We are happy to announce that Brightroom will be the official event photographer for athlete photos. Photos will be ready three to five days after the event. You can visit Brightroom now and sign up for email notification. They will alert you when the photos are ready for online viewing and ordering: XTERRA Kualoa Ranch Trail Runs.
