Washington SeriesAfter a successful trial run last year, the state of Washington will return to the XTERRA circuit with a series of its own in 2013.

The XTERRA Washington Trail Run Series will feature three races during the 2012-13 season, with all three taking place in the western region of the state. It should be noted that the races in Washington were previously called the XTERRA Pacific Northwest Series.

“Trail running is growing by leaps and bounds over here,” said Eric Bone, co-series director for the Washington Series. “In the Seattle area, there were just a few events five or six years ago, and now there are a bunch of them. It just made sense to bring XTERRA here.”

Lord HillThe opening race of the series is the XTERRA Harvest Half Trail Run at St. Edward State Park in Kirkland in October. That will be followed by the XTERRA Soaring Eagle Trail Run at Sammamish in June, and then the XTERRA Lord Hill Trail Run at Snohomish in July.

"I think XTERRA coming to this area is a match made in heaven for any trail runner," said Keith Laverty, an elite runner from Bellevue, Wash. "What a great opportunity to not only run on amazing wilderness trails but also still compete at a high level. Building up and earning points throughout the year via a race series is a cool concept."

Bone said the variety of trails and unpredictable weather in the area should make for some fun – and interesting – racing.

“Of course, it can rain a lot, so there are some places that can get muddy,” Bone said. “But it depends on the venue. Some places don’t get as much rain. There are also a lot of mountains and obviously a lot of trees, but we also have some areas that are kind of like open prairie land. What we want to do is give the people a good cross section of the local trail running scene, so each race will be a little different.”

As with all other XTERRA Trail Runs across the country, the Washington races are open to runners of all ages and skill levels. Each race will offer two separate courses – one short, one long – to accommodate the various levels of runners.

Washington is one of 16 regions across the United States that will host an XTERRA Trail Run Series in 2013. The others are Alabama, Arizona, Atlantic, Southern California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Oregon, Pocono, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah.
