After a successful trial run in Tennessee in 2012, the XTERRA Trail Run Series will return with a three-race series for the Volunteer State in 2013.
“There are some big races in Tennessee, so we know there are a lot of runners out there,” said co-series director Phil Horner. “We’re really excited to bring an XTERRA Series to this area, and we feel like it will be a perfect fit for the growing community of trail runners.”
The inaugural XTERRA Power to the Tower Trail Run took place in April 2012, and the success of that race spurred the addition of two races to create a three-race XTERRA Tennessee Trail Run Series.
The first race in the series is the XTERRA Rocky Top Trail Run in December of 2012 (it will count toward the 2013 standings). That will be followed by the second annual XTERRA Power to the Tower Trail Run in April of 2013. The third race in the series will be the inaugural XTERRA Bays Blaze Trail Run in August of 2013. All three races in the series will take place in the Kingsport area.
Horner said there are some unique and challenging trails throughout Tennessee. At the Power to the Tower race, for example, runners had to climb more than 1,000 feet to get to a fire tower atop a hill.
All of the races in the series will also feature post-race festivities that Horner describes as “beer, barbecue and banjos.”
“Our goal is to make this an enjoyable experience from start to finish,” he said.
