XTERRA Snowdonia Trail Marathon Eryri

Set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, the XTERRA Snowdonia Trail Marathon Eryri is a journey through some of the UK’s most striking natural landscapes. Starting and finishing in Llanberis, Wales’ outdoor capital, this event offers participants the chance to compete in one of the country’s most challenging and breathtaking trail races.

The meticulously crafted routes take runners on an unforgettable adventure through the park’s iconic trails and landmarks. Participants will experience panoramic views and tough climbs as they traverse legendary locations like Rhyd Ddu, Beddgelert, Nant Gwynant, Pen y Pass, and the mighty Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), the highest peak in Wales.

For those taking on the challenge, this event promises not only a test of endurance but a celebration of the spirit of adventure, set amidst a landscape that will leave you inspired long after you’ve crossed the finish line.

Fun fact:

Eryri is the Welsh name for Snowdonia, meaning "the land of eagles," reflecting the region’s rich wildlife heritage. While "Snowdonia" is the familiar English term, Eryri carries deep cultural significance in Wales and has been the official name of the national park since 2022, highlighting its proud Welsh identity.

Eryri is pronounced as "eh-RUH-ree" in Welsh, with the emphasis on the second syllable.

  • "Eh": A short "e" sound, like in "end."
  • "Ruh": A lightly rolled "r" sound, followed by the "uh" sound.
  • "Ree": Ends with a clear "ree" sound, like in "tree."

History and Significance of the Race

The Snowdonia Trail Marathon Eryri has earned its reputation as one of the UK’s most iconic trail running events, celebrated for its breathtaking scenery and demanding courses. Over the years, it has become a cornerstone of the UK trail running calendar, attracting participants eager to test their limits in the rugged landscapes of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park.

In 2025, the event will reach a new pinnacle as it hosts the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship, marking the first time this prestigious competition will take place on European soil. This milestone cements Snowdonia’s status as a world-class trail running destination and brings together elite runners from across the globe to compete for the Half and Full Marathon World Championship titles.

This historic moment not only elevates the Snowdonia Trail Marathon to the global stage but also exemplifies the spirit of adventure and challenge that XTERRA embodies.

How to Get There

Travelling to Llanberis is straightforward, with multiple options available depending on your starting point. Whether arriving by train, car, or a combination of both, the journey offers plenty of opportunities to soak in the beautiful Welsh countryside along the way. Below are the best routes for international and domestic travellers:

From London International Airports

  • Heathrow Airport (LHR):
    • By Train: Take the Heathrow Express to London Paddington, then transfer to a train to Bangor via Crewe. From Bangor, local buses or taxis will take you to Llanberis in approximately 5-6 hours.
    • By Car: Drive approximately 250 miles (400 km) via the M40 and A5, which takes about 5 hours, depending on traffic conditions.
  • Gatwick Airport (LGW):
    • By Train: Take the Gatwick Express to London Victoria, transfer to London Euston, and board a train to Bangor via Crewe. From Bangor, continue to Llanberis by bus or taxi. The journey takes about 6-7 hours.
    • By Car: Drive 270 miles (435 km) via the M25, M40, and A5, with a travel time of approximately 5.5 hours.

By Rental Car

Driving offers flexibility and the chance to explore North Wales at your own pace. The route to Llanberis includes scenic countryside views and the option to stop at various attractions along the way. If driving, ensure you’re familiar with UK driving regulations, such as driving on the left side of the road. Parking in Llanberis can be limited during peak times, so plan accordingly.

Parking

Glyn Rhonwy will be the official parking for athletes and spectators. The car park will open at 5:00am and close at 8:30pm. Parking will be a £7.50 donation for the day. All proceeds will go to a local community group.

There are also numerous pay and display car parks located in Llanberis. Please make sure you buy a ticket because you are very likely to get booked if you don’t!

Please DO NOT park on the streets opposite and around the event village as this is residents' parking only. Please be respectful that people live here and need access to their homes. Use the car parks shown on this map only. Thank you.

Where to Stay

Llanberis offers a range of accommodations to suit various preferences. Given that it is a small countryside village with limited convenience often found in large cities, it's advisable to choose lodging that aligns with your dietary needs, as dining options may vary. Some establishments provide full meal services, while others may offer only breakfast or be entirely self-catering. For those looking to self-cater, local supermarkets are available in the village.

Here are some accommodation options to consider:

  • The Royal Victoria Hotel: Located at the base of Mount Snowdon, this hotel provides comfortable rooms and dining options, making it an excellent choice for those seeking convenience and comfort.
  • Crashpad Lodges: Ideal for budget-conscious travellers, these lodges offer modern amenities and a communal atmosphere, perfect for meeting fellow adventurers.
  • Plas Coch Guest House: A historic Victorian house offering high-quality bed and breakfast accommodations, Plas Coch is situated in the heart of Llanberis, providing easy access to local attractions.
  • Dol Peris Guest House: This self-catering guesthouse offers comfortable rooms with mountain views from every window, providing a home-like environment with the flexibility to prepare your meals.

Please be aware that parking vans overnight in Llanberis car parks, especially the 'Lagoons' and cars or vans in residential roadside locations causes disruption for the local community and bad feeling toward events. Please ensure that you park considerately and find accommodation in recognised locations. Sleeping in vans or cars overnight is not allowed in Llanberis car parks.

Please book your accommodation early as all hotels will be booked well in advance of the race weekend. Please mention the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship or Snowdonia Trail Marathon Eryri when booking your stay.

Where to Eat

Llanberis offers a variety of dining options that allow you to savour the flavours of Wales and enjoy hearty meals to fuel your adventure. Some recommendations include:

  • The Heights Bunkhouse and Bar: A lively spot offering a diverse menu, including vegetarian options, in a vibrant atmosphere.
  • Peak Restaurant: Provides European and British cuisine with a focus on local ingredients, offering a fine dining experience.
  • Spice of Llanberis: Serves Indian and Asian dishes, praised for its flavorful curries and friendly service.
  • Pantri Coffee-shop: A cosy café offering homemade cakes, sandwiches, and Welsh specialties.

For those willing to explore beyond Llanberis, several nearby establishments offer delightful dining experiences:

  • Caffi Gwynant: Located near the base of Snowdon, this café serves hearty meals, homemade cakes, and local specialties, making it an ideal stop for hikers and visitors.
  • Black Boy Inn: Situated in Caernarfon, this historic inn offers traditional Welsh dishes in a cozy atmosphere, reflecting the rich heritage of the region.
  • Ty’n y Coed Inn: Found in Capel Curig, this inn is known for its hearty pub food and scenic mountain views, providing a warm and welcoming environment.
  • The Hebog Café & Bistro: Located in Beddgelert, this picturesque spot offers a range of fresh local dishes and vegetarian options, set against a charming village backdrop.
  • Caffi Caban: Situated in Brynrefail, this community-run café features homemade meals, cakes, and stunning views of the valley, embodying the spirit of local Welsh hospitality.

Traditional Welsh Cuisine

While in the region, don't miss the chance to sample local specialties such as:

  • Cawl: A hearty lamb or beef stew, often served with crusty bread.
  • Welsh Rarebit: A rich, cheesy toast dish infused with ale or mustard.
  • Bara Brith: A traditional fruit loaf, best enjoyed with a spread of butter and a cup of tea.

These dishes offer a taste of Wales' culinary heritage and are well worth trying during your visit.

Course Signage

Please pay attention to the following signs throughout the course. The course will be marked with ribbon and tape. Please follow this on the trails.

Segment Challenge

The Segment Challenge is a unique feature of the World Championship Trail Marathon and Trail Half Marathon courses, designed to celebrate speed and strength across different types of terrain—not just at the finish line.

Each course includes three timed segments:

  • Vert Zone (uphill)
  • Flat and Fast (flat)
  • Gravity Test (downhill)

These segments will be clearly marked with signs indicating the start and end of each section. Timing is automatically tracked, so there’s no need to do anything extra—just run your race and give it your best effort through each zone.

How it Works

  • The challenge applies only to the Trail Marathon and Trail Half Marathon distances.
  • The fastest male and female in each segment for each distance will be recognized.
  • That means six winners per distance—one man and one woman for each of the three segments.
  • Winners will be honoured during the respective awards ceremony and presented with a prize.

Whether you're a climbing specialist, a smooth strider, or a fearless descender, the Segment Challenge gives you the chance to shine—no matter where your strengths lie.

Route Reminders

You must close any gates you pass through, irrespective of how you find them.

Where there are stiles along the route be prepared to queue up and wait to cross. Any runners found to be jumping fences or walls will be disqualified from the race. Please use good race etiquette - First come, first served.

Any person found littering will be immediately disqualified from the event and banned from all XTERRA and Always Aim High Events. Please respect the beautiful location you are running in and dispose of any litter responsibly. Litter and gel wrappers can be disposed of at the designated litter points or handed to an event marshal along the route. Be especially careful when opening gel wrappers, as the tops can easily become separated.

  • The Ultra, Full and Half Marathon routes will climb the slopes of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) (Marathon and Ultra on the PyG track, Half Marathon on the Ranger path). This is a mountainous environment and can be particularly slippery in inclement weather. Please remain vigilant at all times.
  • The Ultra and Full Marathon climbs the PyG Track on the slopes of Yr Wyddfa. YOU MUST NOT veer on to Crib Goch at Bwlch y Moch.
  • The descent from the slopes of Yr Wyddfa is fast. Be respectful and aware of other users on the mountain. Also, take care on rocky sections particularly if it is wet.

Withdrawal From the Race
  • If you pull out of the race you must report to Race HQ or call 07527 034 308 quoting your race number. Failing to report your withdrawal may result in a ban from future XTERRA events.
  • We can pick you up at the nearest feed station and transport you back to Llanberis and the race start/finish area. Please be patient; we will recover you as quickly as possible.
  • If you decide to pull out whilst off road you must make your way to the nearest feed station. Please note this may be behind you.
