2026 XTERRA European Trail Run Championship Taking Place in Germany This Weekend

XTERRA | Oct 15th, 2026

European titles bring runners to the Zittau Mountains, with shorter trails and children’s races inviting families to join the weekend in Oybin.

The 2026 XTERRA European Trail Run Championship comes to Kurort Oybin, Germany, this Saturday, October 17, with continental titles decided in the 25K Trail Half Marathon and 50K Trail Marathon. The championship brings visiting runners into a local outdoor community whose relationship with XTERRA now extends across more than two decades.

Germany becomes the fourth country to host the championship, following its debut in Molveno, Italy, in 2023, Arinsal, Andorra, in 2024, and Collbató, Spain, in 2025. The move from the Dolomites through the Pyrenees and Montserrat to the Zittau Mountains gives runners a different course each year and another community to get to know.

The appeal reaches beyond the title races. Ahead of last year’s championship in Montserrat, French runner Nicolas Wattelle, an age-group bronze finisher in Andorra a year earlier, explained, “I’m running this Trail for fun with friends, with no objective of time.”

A Familiar XTERRA Community

The local partnership began when the O-SEE Challenge joined XTERRA in 2004, establishing the Full Distance Triathlon at nearby Lake Olbersdorf as a regular gathering on the European calendar. The trail event followed in 2019 and joined the XTERRA Trail Run in 2021. Its eighth edition now welcomes European Trail Run Championship competition to the region for the first time.

“Everyone feels equally responsible for making the event a success,” Klaus Schwager explained in a 2025 interview about the organizing community. His description gives the entire community, from athletes to volunteers, equal standing. This is central to the XTERRA Trail Run experience, giving runners time to build friendships and hosts the pleasure of welcoming familiar faces back.

Through the Zittau Mountains

Oybin sits in southeastern Saxony near the Czech border, beneath a sandstone mountain topped by castle and monastery ruins. Forest paths wind between sandstone formations in the surrounding nature park, with repeated climbs and technical descents requiring careful footwork as runners explore the mountains.

The Trail Half Marathon covers 25K with more than 1,000M of climbing. The Trail Marathon extends to 50K and more than 2,000M of ascent, following old border trails and sandstone walls. Both return runners to the event village at Kurpark in central Oybin, where supporters can gather for the finishes.

“The Zittau Mountains offer an incredible setting for trail running,” Henrik Lange wrote in his account of the 2025 event,. He recounted how Marek Neumann helped him through a difficult day, even lending him his gloves midway through their race, before the pair reached the finish together.

More to Experience

The 16K Trail Discovery offers a shorter route into the mountains for runners aged 16 and above. Experienced ultrarunners can choose the 75K or 100K, while European titles remain within the two championship distances. Duo entries also give runners the option to complete the longer courses together.

The Light & Kids program includes 500M, 1.3K and 4K races for younger age groups. The 5.9K Light run welcomes participants aged 16 and above, and the walking option is open to all ages. Families can choose their own distances and spend the rest of the visit supporting one another.

Friday’s check-in and pasta gathering begin the weekend at the event village, giving visitors time to meet before heading onto the trails. During the races, local volunteers staff the courses and refreshment points, continuing the work that has made these gatherings a regular part of life in the region.

Both championship races contribute to XTERRA Trail Run World Series rankings and offer qualifying places for the 2027 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship in Gozo, Malta, on May 8. Qualification comes through age-group finishing positions, with slots specific to each distance. Eligible runners from any country can enter in Oybin, while European titles go to athletes representing European nations. A combined €5,200 prize purse is also available.
