From your first step to the world stage, everything you need to know about the Trail Run World Series.
The Trail Run World Series is built around two distances: Trail Half Marathons (15–34K) and Trail Marathons (35–59K). These categories define the series and World Championship pathways, allowing runners to choose the distance that best matches how they like to run and race.
The Trail Run World Series includes separate age divisions for men and women, ranging from 19U through 80+. Age groups are determined by your age on December 31 of the year of the event, with each division ranked independently and offering its own qualification opportunities.
Minimum age requirements can vary by event and region, so runners should always check the specific race page for local eligibility details.
Physically Challenged athletes may compete either in the Physically Challenged division or within standard age divisions. PC athletes who complete at least one qualifying race are invited to compete at the World Championship in the distance they qualified for.
Every Trail Run World Series race adds to your season story. Points are earned through a mix of where you finish, which distance you race, and how often you show up.
Each race awards base points by finishing position, with Trail Marathons carrying a higher points range than Trail Half Marathons. As a rough guide, a solid finish can earn anywhere from 25–125 points in a Half and 35–200 points in a Marathon, depending on placing.
The more races you complete, the more your points are multiplied through a participation bonus. That means consistency matters. One big day counts, but returning to the trail again and again is what really builds momentum across the season.
In short: run well, run often, and your points will follow.
Yes. Regional championships are open events, and any eligible runner may take part. However, regional titles and jerseys are awarded based on regional representation, not overall finish position. This means the regional champion in a given division is the first athlete from that region to finish.
An athlete’s region is determined by the country they choose to represent at the race, and athlete's are required to hold a valid passport for their represented nation.
Every Trail Half Marathon and Trail Marathon in the World Series serves as a World Championship qualifier. Qualification is distance-specific, with slots awarded separately for Half and Full Marathon events.
Slots are split evenly between men and women and evenly across both distances. The number of available slots varies by event, typically ranging from 28 to 232, so runners should refer to each event page for specific allocation details.
In general, World Championship slots are distance-specific, meaning runners compete in the same distance they qualified in. In limited cases, a Half Marathon slot may be requested to transfer to the Marathon.
Transfers from Trail Half Marathon to Trail Marathon may be considered if no Trail Marathon is available within 500 km of the athlete’s location and the athlete finishes top 15 overall at a qualifying event, or if the athlete finishes top 3 overall in a Trail Half Marathon at any Trail Run World Series event. Transfers from Marathon to Half are only considered in exceptional circumstances and by special request via [email protected].
