Trail Run World Series

Together, We Explore

Run the world, together.

The Trail Run World Series is one journey that starts on your local trails and finishes on the global stage. It’s the entire XTERRA community running as one, connected by the world’s most scenic trails and a shared passion for human-powered adventure.

Run for something more.

Whether you’re chasing points, titles, or simply chasing the sun, the Trail Run World Series gives meaning to every mile. A reason to rise, run, and explore. A reason to keep pushing to the very top, and keep coming back, one climb, one descent, one season at a time.

Run the way you are.

It’s a series built for runners of every age, pace, and path into the sport. Every division crowns a champion, and every champion is recognised with the same respect. What matters isn’t who you race against, but how you rise to meet the mountain.

The start is yours.

This is how we choose to experience the world. On foot, across regions and cultures, one Half or Full Marathon at a time. Where you begin is up to you. What connects us is the journey that unfolds from there.

Your Path Through the Series

This is where your Trail Run World Series journey begins. Choose your distance, terrain, and ambition. Start local, build momentum, and let the series carry you onto the global stage.

Go Half or Go Full

Two distances shape the World Series. Trail Half Marathons cover 15–34K, Trail Marathons run 35–59K. Race one or both, but World Championship qualification remains specific to each distance.

Collect Points as You Run

More distance means more points. More runs build momentum. Track your progress and see how you rank against runners in your age division, your country, and across the world.

Punch Your Ticket to the World Champs

Every Half and Full Marathon serves as a qualifier, with equal slots across distances and age divisions. Finish near the top of your division to earn your place at the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship.

Line Up on the World Stage

The World Championship unites a truly global field of runners, connecting every trail from the World Series and crowning age division champions in a festival celebration of running, nature, and community.

What to Know Before Your Run

From your first step to the world stage, everything you need to know about the Trail Run World Series.

The Trail Run World Series is built around two distances: Trail Half Marathons (15–34K) and Trail Marathons (35–59K). These categories define the series and World Championship pathways, allowing runners to choose the distance that best matches how they like to run and race.

The Trail Run World Series includes separate age divisions for men and women, ranging from 19U through 80+. Age groups are determined by your age on December 31 of the year of the event, with each division ranked independently and offering its own qualification opportunities.

Minimum age requirements can vary by event and region, so runners should always check the specific race page for local eligibility details.

Physically Challenged athletes may compete either in the Physically Challenged division or within standard age divisions. PC athletes who complete at least one qualifying race are invited to compete at the World Championship in the distance they qualified for.

Every Trail Run World Series race adds to your season story. Points are earned through a mix of where you finish, which distance you race, and how often you show up.

Each race awards base points by finishing position, with Trail Marathons carrying a higher points range than Trail Half Marathons. As a rough guide, a solid finish can earn anywhere from 25–125 points in a Half and 35–200 points in a Marathon, depending on placing.

The more races you complete, the more your points are multiplied through a participation bonus. That means consistency matters. One big day counts, but returning to the trail again and again is what really builds momentum across the season.

In short: run well, run often, and your points will follow.

Yes. Regional championships are open events, and any eligible runner may take part. However, regional titles and jerseys are awarded based on regional representation, not overall finish position. This means the regional champion in a given division is the first athlete from that region to finish.

An athlete’s region is determined by the country they choose to represent at the race, and athlete's are required to hold a valid passport for their represented nation.

Every Trail Half Marathon and Trail Marathon in the World Series serves as a World Championship qualifier. Qualification is distance-specific, with slots awarded separately for Half and Full Marathon events.

Slots are split evenly between men and women and evenly across both distances. The number of available slots varies by event, typically ranging from 28 to 232, so runners should refer to each event page for specific allocation details.

In general, World Championship slots are distance-specific, meaning runners compete in the same distance they qualified in. In limited cases, a Half Marathon slot may be requested to transfer to the Marathon.

Transfers from Trail Half Marathon to Trail Marathon may be considered if no Trail Marathon is available within 500 km of the athlete’s location and the athlete finishes top 15 overall at a qualifying event, or if the athlete finishes top 3 overall in a Trail Half Marathon at any Trail Run World Series event. Transfers from Marathon to Half are only considered in exceptional circumstances and by special request via [email protected].
