Is the bike course on-road or trail?
The majority of the bike course is on the trail around Hagg Lake.
Can I use a gravel bike?
For the XTERRA Portland Full Triathlon and the Duathlon a mountain bike is required, no gravel bike. For
the Super Sprint event, all bikes are welcome (except electric bikes), but note that the bike course is mostly
on trails.
Is the run leg on-road or trail?
The majority of the run course is on trails.
Do I need a wetsuit?
In years past, the water temp has been around or above 71 degrees. Meaning, you are allowed to wear
a wetsuit but you don’t have to. This year, with the high water levels and the cold spring, I imagine the
water will be a little cooler than in years past but we will not know until closer to the race. I would bet that
it will be warm enough to swim without a wetsuit.
I want to try the Super Sprint but I am nervous about the swim:
Our goal is to make the Super Sprint race as beginner-friendly as possible. Because of that, we have the swim
leg for the Super Sprint to follow the shoreline. If need be, at any time in the 200m swim, you can swim slightly
to the shore and touch. Also, you are welcome to use a life vest if you want.
My kid wants to do the Super Sprint and I feel like I should follow them:
Yes, you are more than welcome to follow your kid. When you pick up their packet, let us know and we
will give you a volunteer t-shirt to wear and you can follow your kid in the swim, bike, and run. Just don’t
follow them into the transition area, please. For youth 8-10 years old, a parent/guardian needs to be with them for the bike and run, and along the shoreline during the swim.
I have a younger kid that wants to do the Kids Splash Pedal Dash:
Great! This is my favorite event. There is no pre-registration for this event. Raceday registration for this
will be at the registration table beginning around 11am. Remember,
helmets are required.
Can I do a relay?
Yes, relays are welcome and encouraged in all races.
Can I register on race day?
Yes. And you can also register on site on Saturday during the Saturday packet pickup. Last year there was a long line for those registering the morning of the race, so please help us out and register online or during Saturday's packet pick up if possible.
Can I camp at Hagg Lake the night before the race?
Yes. When you register you can add on the camping fee. And if you have already registered, just go
back to our registration page and you can add it on.
Do I have to get a parking pass at the Kiosk as I enter Hagg Lake Recreation area?
We highly suggest paying for the parking pass as you enter the Hagg Lake area. There are also pay
kiosks at the nearby Boat Ramp C where you can purchase your parking pass on the day of the race.
Is there a time cutoff for the race?
Yes, there is a cut off at 1:30 pm. Any athlete still on the course will be allowed to continue with the understanding that there will be no support on the race course after 1:30 pm and they will not receive an official time.
Will there be bike support the morning of the race?
Yes, our good friends at Sellwood Cyle Repair will the on site on Sunday morning before and during the race. New and Used Bicycles, Service, and Repair in Portland, Oregon – Sellwood Cycle Repair
Our race is at Bobcat Cove, but our parking is at Boat Ramp C. As you enter Hagg Lake, follow signs to Boat Ramp C and our volunteers will show you where to park. We must all park in the grass parking lot at Boat Ramp C, do not park in any of the paved parking areas. It is an easy walk from the parking area to our race venue. DO NOT PARK AT BOBCAT COVE or drive in that area to drop items off.
Yes, we always need volunteer help. There are multiple volunteer options. If you do one volunteer option, we will give you 50% off your registration fee (or reimburse if you have already registered). And if you do two volunteer options, we will give you a free entry.
Note that on July 20th, Northwest Trail Alliance is doing a work party on the Hagg Lake trails, if you join in on the work party that counts as a volunteer option (see sign up link before for pre-race volunteer opportunities)
