XTERRA Puerto Rico returns to Combate Beach in Cabo Rojo on April 18-19, with a schedule that gives people many ways to be part of the weekend. Trail events on Saturday are followed by Sunday’s off-road triathlons and duathlon creating space for youth, age groupers, trail runners, families, and locals to connect with nature and each other.
What makes Cabo Rojo stand out is how one coastal community and town embraces the weekend whether they are on the start line, cheering for someone, or simply there to enjoy it. That feeling turns Puerto Rico into a special stop on the 2026 XTERRA World Tour when people look forward to a challenge with appreciation for the balance it holds between outdoor adventure, and respect for the natural environment.

“The entire weekend feels like a happy, festive celebration. There is music everywhere, local food, nervous but excited athletes, and a beach party vibe that makes the event feel welcoming even before you race. The fans and families are a huge part of what makes XTERRA Puerto Rico special. Because the event is right by the beach, it is easy to convince family and friends to come along. They can cheer during the races and then relax at the beach afterward.” Jose Lopez-Cotto, PRI

XTERRA Puerto Rico also plays an important role on the road to Ruidoso, New Mexico in October. The Full Distance Triathlon offers age group athletes a qualifying opportunity for the 30th edition of the XTERRA World Championship, while the Sprint Triathlon gives Youth A, B and Junior athletes a pathway to the XTERRA Youth World Championship. With a strong youth turnout for a key Youth Tour event in the Americas region along with athletes arriving from around the world, Cabo Rojo adds that extra challenge for those looking to earn their place at both championship events.
Saturday’s trail events include the 21K Trail Half Marathon as part of the XTERRA Trail Run World Series. The 10K distance is an XTERRA Trail Run designed to welcome people who come for the movement, the views, and the chance to spend a morning in Cabo Rojo with others who love being out there.

“Puerto Rican culture offers hospitality and a good time. Our Island is an awesome destination for the whole family, from the colorful rainforests to the beautiful beaches.” Daniel Leon (PRI)
“It feels like you’re being accepted into an exclusive friend group with inside knowledge on the coolest spots on the island. Puerto Rico has its own sense of identity and pride, and you have to respect that to understand the value of this race experience.” James Kirschner (USA)
