XTERRA Meets in Germany for the O-SEE Challenge

XTERRA | Aug 12th, 2026

Over 1,000 athletes, scores of locals, visitors, families, and friends flock to Lake Olbersdorf from August 14-16 for one of Europe’s longest-running off-road gatherings.

The XTERRA O-SEE Challenge returns to the Zittau Mountains Nature Park from August 14-16, bringing Elite athletes, age groupers, youth competitors, families, and thousands of spectators to Lake Olbersdorf.

The Full Distance Triathlon headlines Saturday coinciding with the 2026 German Cross-Triathlon Championship. Although the event is not a part of the XTERRA World Cup series, that has done little to thin the field or lessen the power of a weekend that has become a permanent fixture in European cross-triathlon.

26 Years and Counting

Its history began with five friends and a bet in July 2000. They swam across Lake Olbersdorf, rode into the Zittau Mountains, and ran to the summit of Hochwald, where the winner collected a beer at the mountain restaurant. The O-SEE Challenge joined XTERRA in 2004 and has since hosted the XTERRA European Championship five times. It also hosted the ITU Cross-Triathlon World Championship in 2014.

Founder and Race Director Dr. Klaus “Benno” Schwager remains at the centre of the volunteer-led O-SEE Sports team. Around 30 people oversee the event’s main areas of responsibility, while approximately 120 take part in the week-long build.

“We have a term for this: the O-SEE Family,” Schwager explained. “Everyone feels involved in the event and like an equal member of the community.”

The Wide and Wild Field

The start list includes Frenchmen Arthur Serrières and Arthur Forissier, Italy’s Michele Bonacina, and Germans Sebastian Neef, Scott Anderson, and Jens Roth among the leading men. Serrières arrives in Zittau days after winning both the Full Distance and Short Track races at XTERRA Czech, while Neef returns to defend the German title.

France’s Alizée Paties completed the same Czech double and will face reigning World Cup Champion Marta Menditto of Italy, defending German champion Lorena Erl, and Paula Leupold in the women’s race.

The 1.5K swim begins in Lake Olbersdorf before the course enters the Zittau Mountains for a single-lap 37K mountain bike section with approximately 1,050M of climbing. The route passes Hochwald and the ruins of Oybin Castle before returning to the lake through the wooden 180° turn that has become one of the event’s defining course features. The 10.8K run stays close to the lake, taking athletes over the earth pyramid to ring the O-SEE bell.

Past Elite competitor Kerri-Ann Upham said, “The whole town gets behind it,” while German age grouper Peter Lehmann calls it “one of my favorite races.”

Youth Adventures

Saturday’s programme includes the Full Distance and the Sprint which serves as the XTERRA Youth World Championship qualifier for Junior athletes aged 18-19. Sunday continues the qualification pathway with the Lite Triathlon for Youth B athletes aged 16-17 and the Super Sprint for Youth A athletes aged 14-15.

The XTERRA Youth Tour continues to highlight and build opportunities for the next generation of off-road athletes to demonstrate their skills. This will be a large-scale event for many newcomers and returning young talents.

Family races begin Sunday morning, with distances adjusted for different ages and levels of experience. Local Junior athlete Arthur Socha captured why younger athletes keep returning: “The atmosphere before, during, and after the competition is just so cool.”

Saturday Night, Sunday at the Lake

Saturday’s awards lead into the Open Air After Party, when the venue becomes an outdoor party beside the lake. It is one of the weekend’s longest-running traditions and a major reason athletes remain in after the Full Distance finish.

Sunday then belongs to the youth competitors, children, and families. Athletes who raced the day before stay at the lake, and spend another day with the people who create and celebrate this outdoor movement.
