From seasoned champions to first-time participants, every runner brought their unique story to the trail. As the weekend concluded at Sugarloaf, new legends emerged, records were celebrated, and the world of XTERRA trail running witnessed another memorable chapter. Join us as we introduce the champions, highlight the unforgettable moments, and take you through the epic journey of the 2023 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship.
The 2023 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship marked a significant milestone in XTERRA's history. The Sunday morning 42K Full Distance and 21K Half Marathon races, on October 1st, were central to this inaugural event as the newly imagined 2023 Trail Run World Series brought the global XTERRA trail run community together under one banner.
The XTERRA Trail Run World Championship began its journey at Kualoa Ranch on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu in 2008 and remained there until 2019. In 2021, the event found a new home on Maui. This year marked the first time the championship was held outside Hawaii since its inception.
The 2023 championship was unique as it was the first-ever qualification-only Trail Run World Champs. Individual runners had to earn their spot through the brand new XTERRA Trail Run World Series, which spanned five continents and included 38 qualifying events across 18 countries. The most heartwarming observation from the day was the beaming joy evident on the faces of the runners. From the trailblazers, pace-setters and all the finishers, every runner was all in, relishing every rugged step.
Sugarloaf Resort in Maine was chosen as the venue for its diverse topography, providing a challenging race environment. Carrabassett Valley's natural landscape was deemed perfect for the event by Sugarloaf's General Manager, Karl Strand. Steve Andrus, the XTERRA Americas Tour Manager, echoed this sentiment, stating that after a comprehensive global search, Maine had all the right elements for a world-class championship. The Maine Sports Commission and the Maine Office of Tourism were thrilled with XTERRA's choice, highlighting the state's mountain resorts and the plethora of outdoor adventure opportunities they offer.
Home to such prestigious events as the Enduro World Series of mountain biking and the U.S. Alpine Ski Championships, the XTERRA Trail Run World Champs promised more than just a race. Qualified trail runners were also immersed in a festival atmosphere, complete with live music, food, family entertainment, and a bustling vendor village. In addition to the main event, the venue also hosted shorter distance 5km and 10km trail runs, ensuring that runners of all levels had a chance to experience the magic of Sugarloaf. And for the younger enthusiasts, there were races tailored just for kids.
With XTERRA's decision to rotate championship venues, Maine was a fresh chapter, offering athletes new terrains to conquer. And for many participants, this race marked their first footprints in Maine or even the USA, highlighting XTERRA's global reach.
Sugarloaf's diverse terrain provided an exhilarating backdrop for the 42K Full Marathon. From base elevations of 1,417 feet to peaks soaring at 4,237 feet, this was a journey through nature's most challenging terrains.
The race featured a grueling 700-meter uphill climb, a steep downhill descent, and a mix of forest and river routes, culminating in a final uphill push to the finish line. After the initial ascent, the course was designed for speed, allowing runners to maintain a heart pounding pace.
Among the sea of determined faces, certain stories stood out, painting a vivid picture of passion, dedication, and sheer willpower.
Americans Doug Beagle, the M70-74 Full Distance Champion, and Jo May, the F75-79 Half Marathon winner, showcased a love story intertwined with their love for the race. This couple share a passion for marathons by journeying across the globe, participating in countless inspiring events. Their goal of completing a marathon in every US state, almost thrice over, speaks volumes of their relentless spirit.
Hidenari Tsurumi, the M45-49 Full Distance Champion, carried the pride of Japan, having clinched victories in both XTERRA marathons in his homeland earlier that year.
Mel Aitken, not new to the winner's podium, reclaimed her title as the F45-49 Full Distance Champion, a title she had previously won in 2019. Her performance 4 years ago was commendable as she had secured the third overall position from the entire women’s field in that year's race.
But amidst these champions, the spirit of XTERRA was best encapsulated by warriors like Trudy Kerr from Malta. Her story was one of resilience and determination. Bedridden just three months prior due to a herniated disc, she rose against the odds to participate. She recalls, "That 42km route was tough, but the team was amazing. Huge smiling faces. Huge encouragement. Incredible directions posting and signage. Never once did I think I was lost. I’ve run a good few XTERRAs now, and this was definitely the most memorable. Thank you for cheering me on, especially when I really needed it.”
The 42K Full Marathon wasn't just a race; it was a celebration of human spirit, determination, and the community that binds every XTERRA athlete together.
The 21K Half Marathon unfolded like an epic saga with each stride taken on the demanding uphill segment as evidence to all participating runners' grit and determination. As they reached the peak, it wasn't just an elevation milestone but a moment of triumph, leading them into a liberating downhill stretch. The course, while less intricate than the 42K race, was a brilliant canvas of Sugarloaf's iconic trails, allowing these age group warriors to paint their own stories of perseverance and passion.
Here are some tales that resonated deeply:
Andy Wacker (USA), the overall Half Marathon World Champion, was a beacon of persistence. After securing 4th, 3rd, and 2nd positions in previous years, this was his moment of glory. Clinching the overall win and the Men's 35-39 age group title, Andy's journey was a narrative of unwavering commitment. Beyond the race, he champions the cause of trail running, both in the USA and globally, through his association with the American Trail Running Association.
Americans Tom Miller & Debbie Wagner’s story was one of camaraderie with a bond forged in their shared dedication for the sport. Tom (M80+ Half Marathon Champion), defying age stereotypes at over 80, showcased that passion knows no age. This marked his 4th XTERRA World Champion title. For Debbie, the F70-74 Half Marathon Championship marked a validation to her dedication and love for the sport.
Stacey Hendry (USA) defended her F50-54 Half Marathon title and her finish line moment was one of raw emotion. After a tumultuous year of training, her tears spoke of relief, joy, and accomplishment. Off the track, she's known for her unique passion: her beloved donkeys.
Yiu Yiu (HKG) is a young trailblazer as a F15-19 Half Marathon Champion. Yiu Yiu's journey from Hong Kong was not just geographical but also one of determination. Qualifying at both Japan trail runs, she represented the spirit of the XTERRA’s up and coming younger generation.
Geisla Dos Santos Moraes from Brazil gave a performance that was a continuation of her legacy. Having secured commendable positions in previous championships (7th overall in the half marathon in 2019, 10th overall in 2018), she was a force to be reckoned with. Geisla can now say that she is the XTERRA F35-39 Half Marathon World Champion.
At just 11, Canadian Noah Tremblay’s energy was infectious. Racing alongside his father, JD, their bond was palpable. JD, an accomplished athlete and one of the three to complete the EPICDECA, ensured that Noah's experience was memorable. The duo's shared moments on the trail, from the course preview to the main race. Noah's youthful exuberance, combined with JD's seasoned expertise, made their participation a highlight of the event.
American Craig Vogtsberger’s journey is one of resilience and determination. A longtime, faithful triathlete/runner with XTERRA, he has faced challenges head-on, never letting them deter his passion for the sport. Securing the 2023 XTERRA Trail Run World Champion title for the Half Marathon in the Challenged category was yet another feather in his cap. His previous accolades, including age group World Champion titles in 2018 and 2021, and a remarkable 15th overall finish in 2021, speak volumes of his dedication and prowess.
Each of these tales, set against the backdrop of Sugarloaf's challenging terrains, adds a chapter to the grand narrative of the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship. Their stories, filled with sweat, determination, and moments of pure elation, are a salute to the spirit of every warrior that competed on this epic day to be remembered for years to come.
In the ever-evolving world of trail running, XTERRA introduced a novel element to the Trail Run World Series: the Segment Challenge. This fresh addition, available in select races, was a game-changer. Instead of just the overall race time, these segment challenges provided runners with the opportunity to earn additional series ranking points based on their performance in specific sections of the course. Whether it was a grueling climb, a rapid descent, or a flat-out sprint, these challenges allowed athletes to shine in their areas of expertise.
Mason Coppi, hailing from the USA and also the Marathon Distance Trail Run World Champion, showcased his climbing prowess by clinching the Men’s Uphill Segment Challenge. He conquered the ascent with an impressive time of 4:54. On the women's side, the Swiss star, Fanny Lannoy, demonstrated her uphill strength by securing the Women’s Uphill Segment Challenge with a commendable time of 6:39.
The downhill segment, known for its adrenaline-pumping descent, saw Gabriel Eufrasio from Brazil taking the lead. He raced through the Men’s Downhill Segment Challenge, clocking in at 4:56. Joanna Fortier of the USA mirrored this achievement in the Women’s Downhill Segment Challenge, navigating the treacherous descent in 5:55.
Flat segments, while seemingly straightforward, require a unique blend of speed and stamina. Eric Lipuma of the USA proved his mettle by winning the Men’s Flat Segment Challenge with a swift time of 5:20. Laurence Laplante from Canada mirrored this feat, capturing the Women's Flat Segment Challenge title with a time of 5:34.
These segment challenges not only added an extra layer of competition but also celebrated the diverse strengths of the trail running community. Each winner, in their respective segments, truly embodied the spirit of XTERRA, pushing their limits and showcasing their unique talents on the world stage.
As the 2023 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship concludes, excitement for the 2024 season is already building.
